Unfortunately this installment has been my least favorite of the series.
How do I stress to the author that David is a wet paper towel of a man and I don’t give two shits about Stevie and his relationship? This book would have been so so much better if it didn’t have any of the relationship drama in it. And don’t even get me started with the ending..

I have read every book in this series and this was my least favorite. The premise of the boat sounded amazing and I was very excited but about halfway through the book I was just annoyed that barely anything had happened. It was such a slow burn mystery, emphasis on the slow. At about page 275 I had given up I was done I didn't want to read anymore but I just started quickly reading through it to get to the end. And then on page 307 of the book it said "Something finally happened." And that's how I felt about this book too. That is when things finally started happening in this book. I am now a member of "Camp David is a jerk". And I think I'm also part of "Camp I don't think I will be reading any more books in the series."

How dare you, Maureen Johnson. How. Dare. You.
This series is far from profound, but I really do enjoy each installment. Most series, by the time they reach book 5, are really tired and repetitive. While the mystery in this book left a little to be desired for me, Johnson definitely left me wanting more with that cruel ending. I thought I smelled a troupe coming, but now I'm not so sure, and if book six were out yet, I'd be reading it right now instead of writing this review.

Review: Nine Liars by Maureen Johnson
Audiobook Narrator: Katie Rudd
Characters: 10/10 The characters are well-developed and undergo significant growth throughout the series. However, Stevie and David's immaturity and the distracting nature of their relationship detract from the overall enjoyment.
Atmosphere: 10/10 The atmosphere is richly textured and immersive.
Writing: 10/10 The writing and narration are exceptional.
Plot: 6/10 The subplot of David and Stevie's relationship feels extraneous and hinders the pacing of the main plot.
Intrigue: 8/10 The core mystery itself is captivating and engaging.
Logic: 10/10 The series maintains a good level of logic, with the exception of the second book. Stevie's involvement in the mysteries feels organic, progressing from proactive investigation in the first book to being sought out as an expert in later installments.
Enjoyment: 5/10 The romance subplot significantly diminishes overall enjoyment.
