This book is the latest (book 5) in the ‘Truly Devious’ series and I’d say the best one so far. The main characters are a bit older now (were high school aged in the first 3 books) so the tone has definitely matured and the plot line of this book also felt like it stepped up and was much more interesting. I really struggled through books 1-3 as they were so slow (one case spread across the three) but glad I persevered and made it through to books 4 & 5 as they were much more enjoyable

"She said, there's something in the woodshed"

Forget the Blur and Oasis references throughout. This was the earworm I had whilst reading this (The Divine comedy - something for the weekend).

Stevie in London. A cold case from the 90s. David being David.

All fantastic. When's the next one?

Eh, it was ok. The ending was very unsatisfying.

I had to sit with my feelings for a bit before writing this because WHAT THE ACTUAL HELL MAUREEN?!
listen. That ending? straight to jail for you.
we get absolutely no resolution. does Stevie solve the case? yeah, obviously. she always does. DO WE HAVE A HUGE QUESTION MARK CONCERNING HER RELATIONSHIP AND STATUS AT SCHOOL DURING HER SENIOR YEAR? WE DO.
David is so stupid. their relationship is now in limbo. Stevie was stupid and now her place at school is in limbo. I’m so angry. I need resolution like, yesterday.

So THATS why all the reviews hate David >:[ good mystery! Totally bamboozled me tbh and as always I love the TD world ❤️❤️ now to go read The Box in the Woods bc somehow I missed that one oops

As I was reading, I kept wondering why everyone was absolutely dragging David through the mud in these reviews. I never really liked him much before this book anyway, but I was still confused. Then I got to the last 1/4 of the book.... I'm officially in the I hate David club.

Otherwise, I really enjoyed this book! I didn't see any of the twists coming and I genuinely got chills while reading the killers perspective. I'm so excited for the next book!!

Stevie Bell (of the Truly Devious series) is back for her last year at Ellingham Academy, missing her boyfriend David while he’s at university in London. He invites Stevie and her friends to visit as a study abroad trip, and on her arrival she is told of an unsolved murder from 1995. David’s new friend Izzy tells the story of her aunt’s group of nine friends who all spent a weekend at a manor house, and after a night of hide and seek and drinking, two of them were found dead. But in a gated property and with the power out, it had to have been someone inside.

I loved the original Truly Devious trilogy and even Box in the Woods was a fun surprise. I thought the mysteries were original and the characters were (for the most part) really likable. This book takes place mostly abroad in England, and Stevie and Co. try to solve another cold case about murders that had taken place at a manor country house decades before present day. The murder mystery itself was fine, like I was kept guessing (it helped that there were so many suspects), but the group dynamics of Stevie and her friends felt weird in this book.

Also I think it’s time to recognize that Stevie and David do not have chemistry and they never had chemistry and they are so boring to read about. David is still annoying in this book just like he was in all of the other books. The ending of this book felt like a really cheap way to set up a new book. I want to read about Stevie and her friends solving crimes, not Stevie and David.

The classic act before thinking Stevie is back and now she’s travelling to England. I know I should always expect a cliffhanger from this series but I was mad at this one. I always long the dual timelines that Johnson uses in this series. The flashbacks add little details that lead the reader to clues about Stevie’s case.
