I will finish my primary and secondary and university and become teacher because I don't just want to be having any kind voice... I want a louding voice.
"And who knows, maybe someone will talk about you too one day. You know, as a part of history." I stop my sweeping, stand myself up on his level, and look him in the eyes. "Not his-story," I say. "My own will be called her-story. Adunni's story."
I had this book previously listed as a favorite of mine, but since re-reading, it's not as amazing as it was when I first read it, apparently.
First things first: the way it's written. I completely get why the broken english of Adunni would turn someone off from reading this book in its entirety. I think that it was a good choice because it puts us in Adunni's perspective very well. However, the way she spoke was not always consistent. Some sentences would be extremely broken and then one a few sentences later would be in perfect grammatical english. Of course, her speaking skills would vary based on what she's saying but if you read the book you'll know what I mean.
Overall a nice story. Adunni is a great character. I think her and Big Madam's relationship was very interesting. Big Madam is of course a terrible person for what she does to Adunni, but I find that part of you might be inclined to feel sorry for her; her behavior is abhorrent and unforgivable, yet even when she has so much money and power, she is still abused by a terrible man. Adunni and her situation are vastly different but they are both abused by men in their life. It just goes to show that men will take advantage of women no matter what. Also, I liked that the story veered away from Morofu about a third of the way in because at least when I first read it, I was not expecting that. Overall, good though and worth the read.

Honestly, I loved the story but the way it was written was incredibly annoying and really had to push myself to keep reading.
Definitely wondering if I would read another book by this author..

I’ve had this book on my shelf for awhile. My only regret is that I didn’t read it sooner.

I have loved this book. I listened to it and especially loved it as it was brought to life through the brilliant reading of it by Adjoa Andoh (who played Lady Danbury in Bridgerton).
Abi Dare has created characters who feel real and believable and in whom I became completely invested. We travelled alongside Adunni through her most painful and difficult times and were grateful for the influence of some astonishing women. Adunni is part child, part woman, often naive, sometimes very wise but always with a resolve and determination to achieve her dreams.
I absolutely loved the language Abi Dare has used - simple, rich, visual and descriptive - it allowed us to see the world though Adunni’s very lovely eyes.
