Some of Tom Robbins's more recent novels are just too bizarre to enjoy as a whole, but he always makes statements that ring true about certain parts of society. Often he says things no one else has the guts to say. This book was no exception in that regard, although I didn't like the plot or main characters.
"It is tough to say who's a greater thread to the world--an ambitious CEO with a big ad budget, or a crafty cleric with an obsolete Bible verse."
The Bible: "The honey that's dipped from that busy hive can be sweet and nourishing, or it can be hallucinogenic and deadly. All too frequently, the latter is confused with the former. Dip with caution. Reader beware!"

Have tried this book twice now and just can't get into it. Not sure whether it's the paedophilic nature of the central character that puts me off completely but I just can't get into the writing, either. I enjoyed Jitterbug Perfume but this one is not for me.
This book was just not for me. The main character is annoying & gross, and the plot (if you can call it that) was dumb. Robbins certainly has a knack for a quirky turn of phrase ("You could fit all my virtues in Minnie Mouse's belly button and still have room for Mickey's tongue and their prenuptial agreement.") but I gotta be honest; that's just not enough to get me through. (Okay, I guess technically it DID get me through, but just barely.) It got a little better towards the end, but I'm trying to think of anyone I know who I would recommend it to and I can't think of anyone. I have [b:Jitterbug Perfume|8682|Jitterbug Perfume|Tom Robbins|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1388607752s/8682.jpg|1105831] sitting in my stack of things to read & if it doesn't prove dramatically different within the first 50 pages I may be done with Tom Robbins.
Tom Robbins is one of my favorite authors, and this is another magical tale!
Another of Macklin's favorite authors (along with Christoper Moore). I have to say that I enjoy reading Moore a little better, but I love the education in vocabulary I get with Robbins. Show off.

I tired of the repetition of the title in the text. And the general air of self-satisfied cleverness in both the narration and the protagonist. But I enjoyed the story, and was never so annoyed that I considered giving up on the book. I don't think I'll re-read it, but I was amused by it...I guess.
Robbins is smart. Oh man, is he smart and clever. I'd been reading this on my one-hour commute to and from work, and it definitely makes the commute that much faster. I found this strange and 400+ page exploration of contradictions (in people, government, religion, life) quite enjoyable, and I definitely laughed at and reread quite a number of sections for the sheer heck of it.
