Took me way too fucking long to finish this book, like 2 months too long.

I just got bait-and-switched several times! The sample chapter read like a fairly standard detective romance, with better prose than most in the sapphic sub-set of that double-genre. No sooner had I purchased the rest of the book than I got the first bombshell - one of the protagonists was ace (or thought she was, or something - the term was never used). That came a little bit out of left field, and is the sort of thing that would normally be noted in the cover copy. Then there was another reveal and it turned out that she was actually demi-sexual (or something, again no terminology was specified). Again, you'd think that would be mentioned in the description, but whatever, I'm along for the ride now. And then the last big reveal - the protagonists turned into anti-weapons-dealer vigilantes who murdered the bad guys, two of them in actual cold blood, others in arguable self-defense. That is really not what I was expecting out of a procedural, and didn't really seem set up plausibly by the characters' earlier characterizations.

Initially this felt promising.... But nose dived straight into the trash 3/4s of the way through. The idea had potential but I think it quickly grew out of control and now its this monster. For as much emphasis as they put on how much of a mystery it was they really didnt ever really discover all that much before the answers were dropped in their lap at the end of the story. A real joke if you came in expecting a logical explanation. Im EXTREMELY nonplussed about Bailey's finally solution to el scorpion. I feel that shooting him completely went against everything she should have stood for. Whats the point in all the recordings for documentation if you just commit murder yourself??? This book was shit. Im so disappointed.

This was okay read. The character development was fine and the writing was okay. the paced of plot was okay and the narrator was fine. The ending was fine and the plot paced was okay but it was bit predictable.

Honestly I think it would’ve been a lot more interesting had the author not gone with the obvious route of having the ace character being ace due to not meeting the “right” person yet :/

While I did enjoy the pace and adventure of this book - especially the hacking - when I think back I'll probably only remember the poor asexual representation, and the fact that it was never discussed that it changed.

Otherwise the gore, the gunfights and glorious sunsets on beaches were great.
