When people said this book was sad, I expected it to be in a gutwrenching way but it was more sad in a sorry way. Life just sucks sometimes--our circumstances, our minds--and we have to keep moving anyways. I think how annoyed I felt at this book at times is a testament to how real it is. I kept yelling at the Marianne and Connell to "JUST COMMUNICATE!!" but let's be real, I'm no different. What I love the most about this book is that the resolution of the book wasn't necessarily the ending, it was the realization I had about myself a few hours later.

I didnā€™t necessarily love this book. I didnā€™t really love the characters, and I donā€™t know if I really expected anything to happen. But I donā€™t think the book is trying to say thereā€™s destiny. In fact, I think itā€™s the opposite. Sometimes people end up together and help each other and try to be loved by each other. They arenā€™t going to be perfect. And they arenā€™t necessarily meant to be. Sometimes it can work out for a bit and sometimes it doesnā€™t, but hopefully life helps you have a person to stick with anyway.

I donā€™t think Connell and Marianne are good people and theyā€™re not always good friends. Luckily, they still care about each other and help each other right before saving might not be possible anymore. Maybe we canā€™t ask for more than that in normal people. Thatā€™s just who we are, and thatā€™s the best weā€™re going to get.

Overrated. Didnā€™t like the writing style (nothing that was actually ā€œsaidā€ was put in quotes - it was more distracting than anything else and I couldnā€™t get used to it the entire book). I felt so much secondhand embarrassment over every other interaction that the two main characters had with each other and with friends/family. Neither of them know how to communicate effectively and so you end up following the story of this on-again-off-again young couple who are not very likable to begin with and who end up not growing or learning much AT ALL by the end of the story. UGH. Iā€™m so frustrated. I havenā€™t read a book this disappointing in a long time.
