3.5-3.75⭐️ bro this book literally has me so damaged. so so damaged.

okay let’s talk about what i didn’t like and then go up to what i absolutely loved.

for starters we have no quotation marks and the writing style is in third person. i know a bunch of people dnf reads like this but i’ve read so many third person books i looked over it rather quickly.

the plot i had a whole love hate relationship with it because i had such a love hate relationship with marianne and connell. they literally frustrated me to my core but i also can’t imagine anyone else being my man characters.

the quote of this book are phenomenal.

the ending i was a bit disappointed because sally rooney HOW YOU LEFT ME THERE LIKE THAT. no epilogue?? i’m dying here i want more.

will i be watching the hulu tv series? yes. because booktok made me cry twice just by the actors voice. so i’ll probably be back and alter my review or star rating after i watch the series hoping that the book was better than the show or maybe the show will make me like it more??? do i think y’all should read this? yes but when you go into it it’s not what you think it is. also check tws before reading<3

This book blew me away, the complex characters, the underlying currents of socio-economic inequality, the exploration of all types of relationships and the personal thoughts of realistic characters that are easy to relate to. The writing is phenomenal, simplistic but so eerily thought-provoking that I feel as if I see the world differently now. It made me question my own experiences and brought me insights that made me feel seen. I've never read anything like it, and I would recommend it wholeheartedly.

This book was fantastic, it was modern, highlighted everyday sexism in the modern world that many women face and abuse in the family home. It discusses mental illness in young adults being deeply affected by what they have done in the past and how it could shape their future. The writing in Normal People is tender and emotional while also being a romance novel.

This book is stylistically uncomplicated to read, hence my reading time of 4 days to complete this book. One feature I would note is that speech marks aren't used at all in dialogue. Paragraphs would begin with dialogue, with a third person narration and Rooney would inject a line of free indirect discourse.

Overall this is a lovely book with a somewhat innocence to it in that first loves are explored, first time experiences and the uncomplicated way in which the book is written.
