This book is quite complex. The relationship that Connel and Marianne have is painful to read about. Don’t go into this thinking it will end with sunshine and rainbows. It is obvious that both characters needed serious help. Other than that, I would say that the narrating style was a bit odd, the narrator was third person and at times seemed to be limited and other times omniscient. I didn’t quite enjoy the book, the idea that relationships between people can change their overal character and personality is explored wonderfully, however, it does feel like some of the scenes central ideas are repeated (even though this may have advanced the plot, it was hard to read). I think that the character growth felt sudden instead of gradual buildup.

This book just wasn’t for me. I see how people like it. Buts it’s so toxic, so painful, and so torturous to both of them that it just makes it sad to read. I longed for happiness for both of them, and I don’t think I ever found it, even when they were together. Maybe it’s the realness that I didn’t like. Maybe it was the writing style that made it worse. It made it feel rushed and pieces felt left behind.

I absolutely adore the way that Rooney writes. I really love her way with words and there were lots of things said in this book that I will be thinking for a long time from now. That being said, I didn't enjoy the book itself that much. The concept was nice but neither the story itself nor the main characters really appealed to me - their stories were not something that I found interesting or relatable and that really took away from the reading experience.
