Terrifying. Haunting. And gives me a good sense that if nuclear war ever happened that my life would end quickly so I guess that’s a plus.

At first I thought the extreme reactions to the book were millennials and younger people who hadn’t grown up constantly being reminded of the persistent terrifying danger of the world ending 30 minutes from any moment in your day like I did being born in the 1970s. It starts by describing the effects of a nuclear detonation and my reaction was a blasé “yeah - I already know about all this.” I learned how to compartmentalize this fear and stress as a child laying sleepless in my bed through the 1980s.

Then as the book progresses the truly terrifying part for me was learning how misconstrued are the organizations and systems I’d imagined were keeping me safe from an accidental war. In particular, the emergence of the unstable North Korea as a nuclear power is demonstrated as an apocalyptic problem.

Everyone should probably read this, though it was certainly not a pleasant experience.
