I'm sad to say that this was a short story I expected more from and it just failed to deliver. I was expecting a tale that depicts the hardships of living in a poorer area of the city and in some ways it did succeed. Sadly not enough to save the story for me. Basically the main problem I had with it was the brothers perspective. He too grew up with their alcoholic, abusive parents yet refuses to forgive Maggie as she attempts to escape it. In what way does that make sense? I'm just glad I read it as a public domain eBook as I would have been very disappointed if I had actually paid for this.

I was not a fan of this short book. I didn't get to know the characters well enough so my feelings toward them were very surface level. Would not recommend.

Depressing but so powerful. I would teach this before I taught The Red Badge of Courage.

wanted to like it but it's borderline unreadable.

Read for school

In the past, by Stephen Crane I had only read the short story The Open Boat years ago in college. I loved it, and I always had in mind to read more of his work, but I never did. This time, I got the chance to read all the stories included in this book, and I rediscovered what a good writer Crane really is. One day, I'd like to read also his most famous novel The Red Badge of Courage. I'm sure I won't be disappointed.

That was um interesting. I was going to read the rest of the stories that came in this collection of Crane's work but now...I'm going to pass. Like I appreciate the way the topic was handled (I mean it was the late Victorian era and they were pretty sensitive about all matters concerning promiscuity), just some things didn't sit too well for me. This story was v sad :((
