This is the first novella of Harrow's I've read and it was pretty enjoyable! Her style of writing here is quite different and much more casual compared to Ten Thousand Doors of January.

The storyline was fun and Zinnia managed to draw me in as a fellow chronically ill woman. The disabled representation was well done, in my opinion. The grief, hope, and unfairness of it all felt realistic.

As Harrow says, it's very much spider-verse meets fairytale (with an extremely feminist twist). Felt a bit like a well written fanfic, and the pop culture references weren't for me, but overall, it was the perfect length and vibe for a whimsical afternoon. I was satisfied with the ending and am looking forward to more novellas by her.

I read this all in one shot! I enjoy fairy tale retelling and this is one of my favorites that I’ve read. Excited to read the sequel.

Not a bad read, I just didn’t vibe with it. The narrator’s quips and references were a little too on-the-nose and #relatable for my tastes, but I’m sure other people would enjoy it. (Referencing the spider-verse outright was a little much, imo.) The characters felt a little flat as well.

It’s a very minor thing, but I read the physical copy which has illustrations throughout, and it just didn’t work for me. They’re silhouettes of fantasy characters and vines, but they never seem to align thematically or literally with what’s happening on the page. At best it’s misguided, at worst it’s meant to pad out an already short novella. I wish there had been more care there because it would have added to the storybook/folktale ideas at the core of the story.

Cute retelling of Sleeping Beauty where Sleeping Beauty is a lesbian who was blessed rather than cursed.
