A very interesting and inspiring concept of not settling for what you believe fate has in store for you. the characters were so interesting for a 120 page book with fleshed out characteristics

Beautiful, exciting page turner. It is the best fairytale retelling I have read, and I don’t usually enjoy the mix of medieval fantasy and real modern world. But it’s about a kind of character I had never met before: a fatally sick one, and the writing is beautiful, flawless. You should read it.

I really enjoyed the twists that Alix Harrow put on the classic Sleeping Beauty story. Zinnia Grey is a dying girl folklore major who is transported into a Sleeping Beauty story on her 21st birthday when she pricks her finger on a spindle as a dare.

In the fairy tale world, she finds herself trying to save the world's Sleeping Beauty while secretly hoping she can find a cure to her own disease.

I first read Alix Harrow's writing in the Thousand Doors of January. Reading this book solidified to me that Harrow is a new master of the Portal Fantasy. She deftly handles the mix of terror and fascination when a genre savvy protagonist finds themself in one of the worlds they imagined. I really enjoyed this one.

I really enjoyed this book; I think it was a very interesting take on the sleeping beauty story and I liked how the disability rep was sprinkled into the story. This may have been pretty short but I love the amount of detail added, it was very well developed for how short it is, and yes your base knowledge of fairy tales is slightly required but it is still explained just the right amount to refresh your memory. This retelling talks about other retellings which I really liked [very multiverse and it was fun], and I specifically liked how the differences between versions and how they were talked about; they were used to put other things in context and different lessons were pulled from the stories to add to the 'current' plot line. I really liked the disability rep in this book because yes she is independent or whatever but she knows her body limits her and I liked how the limits were touched on (to an extent). There is a magical cure in the end of this book BUT I personally don't think it was completely horrible, I think it was handled respectfully for the most part but it is something to be wary of going into it.

Competent, fun, and clever, even if the attempts at gallows humor frequently tumbled from grim to glib, and some of the self-aware references were a bit much.
Found a decent middle ground solution for magic and disability intersecting?
