It’s a vey short, speedy retelling of Sleeping Beauty but despite the modern protagonist, I like the way Harrow rights her inner dialogue. It’s funny without being millennially cringey. The emotional weights are dispersed pretty evenly throughout the book from Zinna’s conflicted feelings about her parents suffocating love to her own shame about not fighting for her life.

It’s a cute story, nothing life changing but I was entertained for an hour and a half by a fairytale retelling that doesn’t take itself so seriously, which is the best I could ask for.

I've had to think for a moment about why I decided to give these two novellas (A Spindle Splintered and A Mirror Mended) only 3 stars.

I want anyone reading my review to know that I started my journey with Alix by reading The Once and Future Witches... Which just completely enchanted me. I fell in love with the voice and the style, and my favorite part was how the old tales were woven into the story line.

I think when I came to the novellas I was expecting something similar, and so while I didn't *hate* them, they disappointed me.

Dear readers, I think it's possible that Alix never intended for the two separate works to be similar (in voice)at all... They're a separate species of writing... And more power to this author for writing in that way!

So.... Please know that the 3 stars is only a reflection of my personal enjoyment of the novellas, and not an indication of my impression of the author's talent. ❤️

I really enjoyed this little Sleeping Beauty re-telling. Suuuuuure, there are a lot of holes if you think too much about it, and a lot of things just do NOT make sense, but that's beside the point.

If you enjoy fairy tales and fairy tale re-tellings, then I absolutely recommend this. It's a fast-paced plot that cuts out all the unnecessary 'filler', and just leaves you with a good story.

I see it's planning to be a series (or at the very least, it'll have a sequel), which I look forward to continuing on with. Zinnia, Charm, and Primrose are a fun group, and I can't wait to see what they get up to in Book 2.
