This is the first time I have shelved a book because I just wasn’t in the mood. When I picked it up months later I binged most of the book in a day and a half and had a blast. Every new character added to the cast was compelling as hell. The stakes are always believable while ever increasing. I need to pace myself in this series and enjoy it like a fine wine because I will be devastated when it’s done.

My interest in the series is... waning. The main reason is because I don't particularly like the main characters (except Amos, who I love). The new characters were fine in this one. I quite liked Anna. But really, I want Miller and Avasarala and Bobby back. It would balance out Holden and Naomi. Though Holden seems to have taken a step toward not being a self-righteous twat? One can hope.
The plot of this book was fine. There were parts that were more interesting than others. I liked learning more about the artifact. But both the plot and pacing weren't as good in this one as the last two. I guess we'll see how the next book goes.

This book diverged somewhat from season three of The Expanse, but I really enjoyed the differences. Bull is a character that I hated at first, but grew on me over time. I think Melba was also much better fleshed out in this book than in the series.

I have been impressed with The Expanse books and their ability to combine long philosophical reflection with heart stopping tension and relatable characters. I am frankly terrified to go on with the series because The Rocinante is home, and if anything happens to the ship or crew I might not recover.
I appreciate the exploration of faith, human nature, hope, and morality these books offer. And they are profoundly hopeful, while at the same time acknowledging that we are our own worst enemy.
