How have I not read this book until now!!!
I know Mr. Dahl wrote this for children, but as an adult, I absolutely loved it. In fact, I read it again after I finished it.
How delightful to read about witches - mean, nasty witches - who want nothing more than to see all the children disappear. Grandmamma is a fantastical storyteller and tells her grandson about the five children who have gone missing due to witches. My favorite was the story of Ranghild, a young girl who is taken by a witch and ends up living in a painting in her family's living room until one day she disappears from the picture.
"In fairy tales, witches always wear silly black hats and and black cloaks, and they ride on broomsticks. But this is not a fairy tale. This is about REAL WITCHES. The most important thing you should know about REAL WITCHES is this. Listen very carefully. Never forget what is coming next. REAL WITCHES dress in ordinary clothes and look very much like ordinary women. They live in ordinary houses and they work in ordinary jobs. This is why they are so hard to catch."

I've never read this and figured October was a good time to do it. Miranda Richardson did a great job of narrating. And my favorite thing about it is Quentin Blake's wonderful cover illustration.

It's not my favourite Roald Dahl book, but the relationship between the boy and his grandma is very touching.
