So like, I get the appeal and will definitely be reading the next book, but this has me questioning everyone who says it is just a copy of the Hunger Games. Like yes, it is dystopian fiction, and yes, there are "factions" that are reminiscent of the districts. But other than that, I didn't see any resemblance at all. Nice book! (yes, I have no energy to write an actual review rn. sorry ¯\(°_o)/¯)

Second time reading it:
I absolutely loved it. 5/5 again.

Wow.
So in love with this book and its characters.
Can't form coherent thoughts right now; will edit this soon.

Moving on to Insurgent now..

---Edited---

Okay, my thoughts on this emotional roller coaster of a book:

- What is Divergent? I need to know now.
- What? Dauntless? Whatwhatwha.
- Caleb. I didn't see that coming.
- Oh my god. Four four four y u be so hot?
- I can practically feel the electricity between Four and Beatrice!
- This is how you make readers fall in love with characters in under 200 pages.
- God, I want to be Dauntless. I want to experience the adrenaline rush!!
- Did I mention my love for all the characters, especially, Four?!?! <3
- Love the writing style! Good thing she doesn't try to be overly poetic like some other authors out there. *ahemLaurenOliverahem*
- Al, how could youuuuuuu?!?!
- There is no love triangle!!! YESSSSS!
- NO SAPPY ROMANCE, EITHER.
- OH MY GOD. OH MY GOD. HER MOM, HER DAD, WILLLLLLLLL?! This is not happening.
- I am so not continuing with the series if Four dies.
-“I am not Abnegation. I am not Dauntless.I am Divergent. And I can’t be controlled.” gave me the chills.
- THE FEEELSSSSS
- OMG. DON'T DIE. DON'T PLEASE. THIS IS NOT HAPPENING. NONONONONONONON
- Now I know why people say Delirium is a rip off of DIVERGENT.
- HOW WILL I SURVIVE AFTER I AM DONE WITH INSURGENT?
- WHY DIDN'T I READ THIS EARLIER?!
- I am so not telling other people in my school about this.
- I love it. I love it. I love it.
- This is so different from the Hunger Games!! Eeek
- I AM SO GLAD I HAVE INSURGENT AS AN EBOOK.

If I had to sum up this book in one word, I would say: meh.
It is not an incredible book, not a bad book, not very captivating, and not repulsive either. It is just average and it sounds like a pale imitation of Hunger Games.
The plot isn't bad, but after finishing the first book, I really wonder what the other books can add to the story... I really feel like the plot can stop here.
Spoiler We are not going to lie, the end of the story can be guessed since the beginning: we know that Tris will succeed and fall in love with Four. No surprise!

However, there are good things in this book, but one more time, what can the other volumes add?
Anyway, it is an average book that has an average grade from me.

“Fear doesn’t shut you down; it wakes you up”

Wow. This world and these characters are so real and easy to connect with. I loved the relationship dynamics between characters - especially Tris and Four. Each character was believable and it was clear that each was an individual with a backstory and reasons for actions - all the secondary character arcs were in depth and well executed without being the focus of the story.

The plot was well paced and set up well for the next book. I'm really excited to start Insurgent because the world building and plot just from this first book is crazy! I've wanted to get into this series for a while and I'm so glad I've finally started because it really lives up to the hype. So far there's been a great balance of romance/tension, action, and world building.

And GIRL . The characters are so fuckable.

I would honestly give this book a 3.5. It is a super fast read. It had a really great potential premise, but the author did not write as well as I would have hoped. Also, the story went exactly where I thought it would other than a few small surprises here and there.

Overall, this book is entertaining and fun to talk about with friends.

I knew little about this series before I picked up the audiobook for it (b/c it was on sale.) The reader of the first person perspective was adequate in providing the voice of the main character Tris. I'm not in the YA demographic (a few decades since I was there) so the teen romance felt silly and unnecessary. I did find the story-world and how they've reconfigured society to be thought-provoking. As this first book sets the scene and the characters, I'm hopeful that the second (which has the same narrator) will have more world building and socio-political intregue - and less teen romance. I will have to wait and listen to see how this plays out.

The basis of this book definitely reminded me of The Hunger Games, but I felt that it was different enough that I stopped thinking about that fact once I was almost halfway through the book.

Personally I thought some of the descriptive aspects of the book got a little repetitive, especially when it came to the Dauntless faction. I found myself saying, "OK, I GET IT. THEY ALL HAVE TATTOOS AND PIERCINGS."

But overall, the book was good. I read the entire thing over this past weekend and I'll definitely start reading the second book immediately.
