Fevered Star by Rebecca Roanhorse was a delicious adventure fantasy that broadened our scope and understanding of the magical world, expanding it not only to the land but even far, far, north to the land where the gods died. We followed the characters as they dealt with politics, treachery, and land adventures instead of sea adventures. We saw characters rise and fall. It was glorious. We got to see a softer and a harder side of Serapio as he dealt with living past the moment he'd worked towards his entire life. I hope that the next book has more Xiala in it. This book focused a lot on Nara and she's not my favorite character, though I really enjoyed her character development. It was very satisfying to see her come into her power.

Overall,
This book did suffer from a bit of 2nd book syndrome. It was essentially setting up for everything that will happen in the next book. I am still invested in these characters and can't wait to see what Rebecca Roanhorse has in store for us in the final book of this trilogy.

A good bridge for the finale, but as always some second installments are just setting up the chessboard rather than doing much. Which is good, and needed, but sometimes it becomes exhausting.
Just like the 1st in this series, this was a wonderful read. I absolutely love the world l, although I think listening to it (without a map to look at), along with the way travel time was portrayed, made it feel much smaller than it did in the first book. In a way I didn't like quite as much. It also smacked a little of "settings things up" for a lot of the book. I'm really looking forward to reading the last in this series!
2.5 rounded up
Ooooof, second book slump.
While I loved the overall story and pacing of the first book, this one dragged. It seemed like more of an info-dump rather than a story. Lots of buildup, very little payoff. Soooo much telling, and another character added to the POV made it almost too "noisy." Also, Xiala became kind of a whiny little b to the point where I was mostly annoyed with her.
Here's hoping the last book overcomes the slump and is as good as the first book.

This was still good, but it definitely had a second book feel to it. I'm looking forward to the next book!

Yet again nothing happened except for a couple pages. Too much diplomacy and politics I wanted gore and drama.

Not a strong as Black Sun (big middle book syndrome going on) but still very strong. Naranpa's story was definitely my favorite (and felt the most complete), and I'm glad that we got more development for Balam, Okoa, and Iktan. I'm interested in where Serapio's arc is headed, but he was mostly in this book as an ominous offpage presence more than a real character (with a couple notable exceptions). Xiala is incredibly frustrating in this book. She defines herself by her relationships, mostly her relationships with men, in a way that she did not in book one and that I strongly disliked, and she spent far too much time pining and doing nothing. I'm very excited to see what will happen with her in book three, though. I enjoyed the pacing and the politics overall, as well as the expansions of the world, though there was a LOT of telling and not enough showing for my taste, and I still don't have a super clear picture of the city of Tova. Still, very much excited to read Mirrored Heavens.
