this book took me much, much longer to read than the first, and i think that’s because it felt so slow. even at the end, the major events and cliffhangers didnt feel that high-stakes or tension-filled? it kind of ended up feeling like a filler book to bridge what i assume to be the third book coming
I honestly can't get enough of this trilogy so far. I told someone recently that what I loved the most about it is that it's all kind of messy - like real life. Nothing goes perfectly for anyone and so you're always left wondering what will happen next. If you liked the unpredictability of Game of Thrones you'd probably love this series too.
1.5* rounding it up bc i’m nice, not bc it deserved it. yearning after a person you’ve known for a few days is one of the worst things an author can write about
For me, the count down of days until the solar eclipse in the first book created a sense of suspense that this book lacked. That said, while I don't think it was quite as good as the first, it was a seamless continuation, picking up immediately where it left off. The gray area of Serapio's actions and motivations was much more satisfactorily explored. Nara's story, which was frustrating and boring for me in the first book, was a highlight in this one as she faces and tries to overcome the repercussions of her naivety. I am a big fan of the magic in this world and the descriptions of the clothing, geography and architecture.
