I read this after reading Sparrow by James Hynes. Sparrow is a fantastic book, and the stronger of the two, and I might have rated The Wolf Den higher if I had read it first. The characters are not quite as compelling, the writing not quite as strong. With that said, the first half of the book is interesting and often sad as it explores the lives of slaves in Pompeii, while the second half of the book really picks up and delivers a solid ending.
