It impressed me as both a classics and English student. Harper’s Pompeii is striking, her prose informative and her characters complex.

4.5.
The Wolf Den is a historical fiction story about Amara, a prostitute living in a Pompeii brothel in ~70s AD.
The book starts off slow to paint a day-in-the-life of Amara's life between the Wolf Den (brothel), the Sparrow (tavern), and the Venus baths to pick up customers. Previously a doctor's daughter in Greece, Amara is sold to become a slave of Felix (her pimp) and is subject to a life of poverty, violence, and spite. The plot moves quickly once she ramps up her money laundering and puts her musical skills to use to catch higher-status clients, one of whom ultimately grants her freedom.
Despite being set in ancient times, Wolf Den has the dialogue and pace of a modern YA novel. Raunchy at times and plot-driven with a dynamic set of characters and relationships, it was a divergent read from the typical stuffy historical or mythological fantasy books set in that era. I was page turning quickly at the end and am looking forward to the next book in the trilogy.
