Some say this story reads like a self-help book-- a sentiment with which I agree. That said, I read it at a time in my life when I needed the kind of help and hope it provided. This is cheesy and I feel silly writing it but this book made a big difference in my life.

Storyline is interesting but the conclusion feels a bit forced. Very reflective. Writing reminds me of a well-written fanfiction, which might be a selling point for some.

“You can be anything you want to be. Because in one life, you are.”

the vibe: 13 Reasons Why meets A Christmas Carol. the beginning of the book felt a little slow to read (nothing poorly written, just not my cup of tea to read about someone’s depressive thoughts). however, the negative events in Nora’s life were almost comical, so it didn’t feel like a total drag. after she popped into the midnight library & started getting a feel for how it works, the book really started to pick up.

 (semi-spoilers):

 each storyline was easy to sink into & gave an interesting outlook as to how different her life could’ve turned out. as the book went on, she realized that most of her “poor decisions” or “regrets” from her root life actually saved her from far worse. I, for one, liked this mindset & I kept highlighting the philosophical quotes throughout the book. some may have felt like the life lessons were a little corny, but I really loved them. 

 all in all, great book that surpassed my expectations! the ending left me feeling good and complete and happy for Nora, while leaving me reflective about my own life.

Haig writes into words the despair of depression, followed by the persistence of hope, all with a main character whose wit and humor shows through even at her most despairing. In his philosophical approach to finding a will to live, Haig does not fall prey to the quick fix cure of "just try to be happy," but instead walks a delicate line of balancing situational depression and mindful changes in perspective.
