Reminds me a lot of The Jungle by Upton Sinclair. It's very beautifully written.

This is a phenomenal read about searching- for gold, for home, for purpose, for peace- and a unique kind of sisterhood. From the first page, I was fully immersed in the story and constantly on edge. The people and places in this story are so vividly depicted that they’ll stay with you long after reading. Writing like C Pam Zhang’s, that is so powerful it causes a physical response, is rare. Read it!

I give it a 4,5 instead of 5 because it took me a while to get used to the characters, the language and the storytelling. In the beginning I didn't feel very much invested in the characters and their story. But I'm very happy I continued reading. While the writing style felt distant in the beginning, after a while it felt like poetry. The characters grew on me, they are complex and layered and you get to see multiple points of view. One of them literally was a shift in the wind for my view on that person.

To me this book is about (not) belonging, searching for a home outside and inside yourself, being looked at but not being seen - but wanting to be really seen, identity, family, trauma, class, having (no) rights but most of all the right to write your own story.
