I thought it was a fun read but it dragged a little at the end. I think if it had been about two hours shorter it would have been better

I thought the premise of this book was really interesting and overall I liked it. The characters were the best part, I thought the different dynamics between them were fascinating and I liked how imperfect they all were. I was obsessed with whatever was going on between Sheridan and Devin and I really enjoyed the development both of those characters experienced. The actual horror element was a little underwhelming to me. I thought the psychological impact on the characters was well done, but the actual

themselves weren’t super scary to me, but that’s a personal opinion. If you’re looking for something super scary or creepy this isn’t it, but I think it’s worth it for the character dynamics.

This is Courtney Gould's third novel and I think it is her best one yet. Horror is not typically a genre I gravitate towards (though with this book, that may be changing), but I really, really liked this. The setting was fantastic - Gould did a brilliant job making the forest as terrifying as it really is in real life and I felt like I was on the edge of my seat the entire time I was reading the book. Without spoiling too much, I also appreciate that there remains a layer of unknown regarding the horror in the book. The emphasis in the book really is about the characters and their survival, not figuring out why/what is happening - which I think, in turn, ramps up the horror (how does the saying go? a horror movie becomes half as scary once you see the monster in the dark?). I also really appreciated that the characters were believable, layered, flawed, and showed noticeable growth throughout. Sure, they did fit the horror cliches, but the cliche was only part of the characterization - not the whole thing.

Overall, an incredibly engaging and gripping horror novel that generates all the anxiety and fear you'd want from such a book. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys well-written, character driven horror.

This book had some slow parts. If it didn’t have the slow parts, I would have rated this four stars.
