The last 50 pages of this book were amazing. But the first 300 pages were slow and tough to get through.

I can’t decide what I want to rate this. There are a few parts of the book/reasons I would rate it closer to 3.75 stars, and that’s what I was going to rate it until the end. The twist at the end made this book so much better. I want to rate it higher but at the same time don’t think it’s a five star book.

It didn’t feel like much of a thriller until about half way through, though I was still interested immediately. The ending sure threw me, and in the BEST possible way. Looking back, all the pieces of the puzzle were there. But you’ll simply never guess. Amazing!

Gets better as it goes on

It took me a while to get into it but it is a very good book. Once I got past the first few chapters I couldn’t put the book down. The story pulls you in and the little twist at the end makes it so much better

Do you enjoy mysteries and thrillers? Do you like trying to figure out the who, what, when and why of a story? Personally, I love reading a good mystery/thriller and deciphering these elements. Losing Brave kept me hooked and engaged in the story from page one – which can be quite the feat at times!

Throughout the book I found myself connecting on some levels with the main character Payton who at times mentions that it’s difficult to pretend everything’s okay when you yourself can see the cracks starting to show. It’s a good reminder that no matter how someone behaves or speaks, you never know what is going on in their life and which stressors may be playing a role. Treat everyone with kindness and respect.

I found Cole, Dylan’s boyfriend, pretty mysterious … and even a bit edgy. In the first few chapters I wasn’t entirely sure of his character or his motives but as the story went on I found myself enjoying his refreshing attitude. It seemed that whenever the darkness seemed overwhelming, Cole was there holding a glowing torch.

If you like a good mystery or thriller and love beautiful covers, I definitely recommend you pick up Losing Brave!

Received advanced reader copy from publisher via Baker & Taylor book supplier

A year ago, Payton sister Dylan disappeared from a bus station and Payton is struggling to remember what happened. Payton was there with her sister and Nana; why can’t she remember? When another girl with features similar to Dylan goes missing, Payton realizes the perpetrator may be stalking her and she begins to try to unravel what happened at that bus station.

It is so rare for me to finish a book that I end up giving one star, as, if it is leaning toward one star, I put it aside as a DNF. But something compelled me to keep reading – and I don’t even know what THAT was. I was not drawn to the main character Payton; she annoyed the heck out of me. And, while I was reading an advanced copy and grammar/typos are to be expected and can be overlooked, jerking me from here to could not be overlooked. Example: “Poe” was tossed out in the story before she was really explained (I actually thought to myself “Who the hell is Poe?” when I first read the name). I really had to pay attention to the date chapter headings so I was aware that I was reading a flashback. I hope, in the final version, the publishers decide to use a different font or italics to make it very clear that the reader is going back in time.

But the biggest thing that yanked this down to one star: the ending. Obviously, it is impossible to discuss this without spoilers. So:
SpoilerI’m really supposed to believe that Dylan’s boyfriend stayed quiet for an ENTIRE YEAR about her identity??!! That he just stood by and let her think she was superficial, spoiled Payton? And that Dylan’s parents REALLY DIDN’T KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWINS??!! Oh come on.
I know that fiction is fiction and a stretch of the imagination is required. But this was too big of a stretch to expect a reader to swallow.
