Willing to retry, but I couldn't get into it

Finally! Finished it this morning in a mad sprint. I enjoyed it for the most part but, tbh, I'm not that keen to keep reading thr series. I'm just tired of multi book series at this point and something as dense as this over several books just gives me a headache. I think I'm going to give the fantasy a nice long break after this.

On a reread of the series after finishing book 4, most of the problems I had with this first book, including the expansive cast list, the nonlinear storytelling, etc., seemed to go away. What I was left with was an engaging story full of twists and turns—some of which I'd forgotten and was delighted to be reminded of—and clever little hints that my future knowledge made me better prepared to pick up on.

It sounds strange to recommend a book as a reread, but I think it's worth it to push through to the fantastic book 3, and when you're done with the series, give the whole thing a second spin for a more complete experience.

Some interesting character moments buried in worldbuilding that detached me more from the world than invested me in it. Also not sure why this shows  up as a queer rec. Queerness is incidental thematically and characteristically among the few characters identified 🥴

Although I enjoyed this book, I found it VERY confusing trying to keep all the characters straight especially with the soul swapping. The writing at times was weird…cliche but not…3/5 stars and I plan on reading the next one. The storyline is pretty griping so I want to see what happens next!

The writing is good and I can appreciate the work that went in to building out the world and the pieces necessary to carry out the plot. If you’re into this then it has a lot of

That said,

- hard for me to get into a book where everyone bar the main character is cruel, even when they’re good.

- complicated plots are one thing. Following along in a society where people are constantly reborn, no one is actually related to who they say they are, and a society that seems to hinge on inheritance but also just doesn’t makes things needlessly complicated.
