This...is not a good book. I'm honestly flummoxed as to how it has such a high score on here. At about page 200 I told myself I could muddle through and it might get better. By page 300 I quit. Very vague spoilers ahead, although nothing plot important, but I will try not to be too specific.
This book has a lot of structural problems, and some serious issues with every character (and narrator) sounding like they have the same general personality. But my biggest complaint is the main character and his development. This book super sexualizes the main character (a 15 year old boy). I swear every female in this book either talks about sleeping with him or does sleep with him. And I'm not kidding. Random housemaids. Dubiously related family members. Women he met two pages ago. There is an uncomfortable amount of women sex slaves in this book. There's even a dragon randomly obsessed with him. It's like this book was written for a self obsessed sex addicted teenage boy. At one point he meets a girl, becomes her lover off page, she leaves, and I am supposed to be emotionally invested in his intense reaction, and it all happens over like ten pages. And then he immediately is interested in someone else. Maybe somewhere underneath all this fetishizing there was an interesting fantasy world and plot, but I just couldn't get to it. 300 pages in and I have no idea why he was even where he was and how it mattered to the plot. I couldn't tell you any important character's motivation either. Gonna go read something else now.

I'm really conflicted on this book; on one hand I did enjoy it, but on the other, I only fully grasped the world building at like 40%; there's just so much information you get and not even the Glossary is much help, if I'm being honest.
Also, the whole business of switching souls was really confusing

An engaging complicated, footnote heavy braid of tales
Audio: (5) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
& Story: (5) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This book was fantastically complex and I loved it! The cast of narrators was excellent, Kihrin was an interesting main character, and the world was tragic and sad but also very intricate too. It was full of all those fun fantasy tropes, that I've come to really love and enjoy as well!
It was really the complexity for me, the book was a story inside a story inside a report? And everything involving the empire and the royal family was draped in conspiracy! The secrets, the drama, the intrigue – and oh so many twists and turns! It felt like I was reading a puzzle and watching it come together was so satisfying! Can't wait to continue the series and uncover more of what this series has to offer!

Epic fantasy is back in the building! This was incredible. I haven't been so invested in a story in ages. And the sense of humour throughout was impeccable, I tabbed so many funny quotes. Even though this took me over a month to read and I should probably take a break, I'm itching to go out and pick up the sequel.
