I should preface this by saying that I am a Lana fan.
I'm relatively new to poetry, it's something that has always interested me, however, I didn't know how i should read it, or what it really was.
Lana explained her poetry and what it is to be a poet. The simplicity of her philosophy was beautiful and she writes with grace.
This collection inspired me to read more poetry and to write some of my own.
I listened to this on audio and also read the poems as they are. Both times I felt different things and enjoyed it just the same.
I recommend Lana's poetry whether you like her music or not, there is something to gain through her metaphors and writing. That's what I think at least.

I did not like this at all. I was super pumped for it as I loooove her music, but honestly, it was a drag to finish. I found The concepts weren’t sophisticated, and some of the formatting and style felt incomplete and trying too hard. Hard pass on ever reading this again.

I’m biased because I love Lana Del Rey, but I can admit some of these made me laugh. Most of the poems I found beautiful, and my favorite was The Land of 1000 Fires.

If I’m going to keep on living the way that I’m living I can’t do it without you.

highly recommend listening to the audiobook - lana deal rey’s cadence paired with the soft music and sounds in the background is immaculate to listen to.

6/5 ⭐️ this made me cry i love it.

A visually beautiful book. The pictures chosen, how some poems have corrections. Feels like you’re part of her stream on consciousness. And there were a few great poems I’ll save.

But I think maybe this would have been better to listen to. Some poems felt like songs. Repeating refrains, it wasn’t really my jam of poetry. I want to FEEL. And I just felt like I was reading.

Was a good go for her first published book.

This is one of my rare "guilty ratings", as I like to call them. Lana's first (and hopefully not last) poetry collection is not perfect, but as a fan, I can't really turn off my subjectivity. I've been listening to her music since she released Born to Die (the single) and been a fan since the release of the mv for National Anthem (to this day, I still wonder how she didn't earn a stupid Grammy for that alone), for a whole decade, she influenced my perception and overall taste when it comes to art. Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass is channeling that Lana del Rey glamorous yet melancholically vintage essence unique to her works, making it perfectly imperfect, or imperfectly perfect, either one is good. Each poem, even the haikus at the end, feel like songs, which is quite fitting, since most of her songs (especially those from Lust for Life and onwards) feel like musical poetry. I can definitely see myself returning to this collection (or its audio version), maybe reread it at the end of the summer.

may i always keep my eyes level to this skyline
assessing the glittering new development
off the coast of Long Beach
never to heaven
Because i have faith in man as strange as that seems
in times like these
and it’s not just because of the warmth i’ve found in your
brown eyes
but because I believe in the goodness in me
that it’s firm enough to plant a flag in
or a
rosebud
or to build a new life.
