Sadako was 2 when the United States dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Ten years later, Sadako starts feeling sick...and learns she has leukemia. While in the hospital, Sadako's friend inspires her to fold a thousand paper cranes in order to make a wish to be healthy...but Sadako can only make ~600 cranes before she dies.
An early chapter book that focuses on the ramifications of the atomic bomb. While a good reading level for elementary aged students...it's slightly problematic in that neither the author nor the illustrator are originally from Japan. Read Barefoot Gen instead.

The Boo's review (9). It took me a long time to decide how many stars to give this book because it was so sad. It was a good book...just very sad. I wanted to know why we bombed them and why kids had to die for years afterward. I'd like to learn how to make paper cranes and I hope that there is never another bomb like that.
