Incredible read. Passionate take on what it means to truly be a patriot. I believe reading this book generates empathy. Quite the topical read in today’s political climate.

"The business of skepticism is to be dangerous. Skepticism challenges accepted institutions. If we teach everybody, including, say, high school students, habits of skeptical thought, they will probably not restrict their skepticism to UFOs, aspirin commercials, and 35,000-year-old channelees. Maybe they'll start asking awkward questions about economic, or social, or political, or religious institutions. Perhaps they'll challenge the opinions of those in power. Then where would we be?"

- Carl Sagan, 1995

This book is spot on, and it is unfortunate to see that so much of what Sagan warns about has come to fruition in many ways today. I find it inspiring though that he can also visualize alternate, but ultimately achievable progress and he dares us to dream that along with him; to make that a reality. He makes a point in the book that scientists should absolutely engage with the public, but do so in understandable and clear language, something he excels at here. The only thing I would say didn't engage me was the overextended and thorough discourse on aliens or the lack thereof, which is more a personal gripe.
