Comprei este livro para ler por indicação de um podcast, pensando que talvez fosse uma leitura pesada, ou mesmo antiquada, mas mesmo assim muito interessante.
Nunca imaginaria que seria um livro que mudaria a forma como eu vivo. Com humildade e simplicidade, Sagan escreve um livro ao mesmo tempo, temporal e atemporal. Temporal por trazer diversos debates acerca de tecnologia, ciência e sociedade nos anos 90, atemporal por serem debates que no seu cerne ainda nos cabem. Em vista do nosso cenário político, e em especial o cenário político norte-americano, falar sobre alfabetização científica e senso crítico se torna cada vez mais importante.
Enquanto lia não conseguia parar de pensar o quanto perdemos quando perdemos Carl Sagan, e o quanto queria saber o que ele diria hoje, de que forma nos guiaria por entre as armadilhas pseudo-científicas e mentirosas com as quais nos bombardeiam. E a verdade é que este livro já é o guia para nós mesmos nos tornarmos pessoas mais críticas e curiosas, e desta forma imortaliza um pouquinho de Sagan dentro de quem o lê.

Have you ever been asked the question (on social media perhaps) about what one thing you would tell your younger self, if that were possible? I've decided that I would tell my younger self about how much people, to put it kindly, how much they dissemble. It certainly isn't always malicious, and it sometimes isn't even conscious, but egad it's pervasive. Rather than write out a big long speech about it though, I could probably just give my younger self a copy of this book.
It has some flaws, especially in that many of the references are dated. It also lacks a straightforward narrative, which makes it difficult to retell in conversation. But the core topics of critical thinking, skepticism, curiosity and wonder are all still relevant and worth the read. If you can avoid the temptation to become a misanthrope, this book might even make you want to be a better person.
