i see myself reflected in machado's characters. a lot of the material is emotionally resonant; painfully so, but therein lies its value.

Her Body & Other Parties is collection of short stories. These stories are dark, feminist works of magical realism. There is lots of sex going on in here. As I usually find to be the case, some of these stories spoke to me more than others. The SVU one in particular just didn't do it for me.

(3.5) reread this recently and forgot to comment on it. so many of these stories are dragged out to the point of obfuscation and its central statements fall apart under the weight of overly ornamental writing. machado outlines strong ideas in each entry but refuses to take them in any meaningful direction. especially heinous is still a dear novella to me, but i found it so hard to get through the entire collection this time around.
