This book was a bit of a slow start for me - I would read a few pages here and there but finally committed to finishing it. I liked the dual storylines, learning more about a region I’m not that familiar with and the new take on a WWII story.

Plot is good, but a lot of it is very on the nose. The dialogue/character’s narrative feels a bit amateurish.

Stopped so I could read the next book in the Holly Black ‘The Cruel Prince’ series

It is a story about a 13-year-old French refugee in Morocco in 1941 (Josie) and a modern day woman with problems (Zoe.) Zoe finds Josie's journal in her new home and learns about her interesting life. I enjoyed the chapters about Josie the best. It was fun to relate to the Moroccan cultural references.

Just loved this book. Really enjoy the present story with the past that Valpy employs. Very rich context.

A beautifully written story of hope, kindness, love… Gorgeous descriptions of Casablanca and the Moroccan countryside, and very thought-provoking words. I underlined a lot of phrases that really made me think about the beauty of life despite all the suffering we see. And how we can all do what we can to help - even if it’s just a little bit.
