Dual timeline---alternating between Josie in 1941, a half-Jewish girl fleeing the Nazis in France relocated to Casablanca, and Zoe in 2010 in Casablanca with her husband (who is there for work).  Zoe finds Josie's diary in the house she is renting and becomes captivated in Josie's life while avoiding problems in her own.  It is a bit of an odd writing style--in Zoe's chapters it always felt like something was off.  In the end you figure it out but it just remains odd.  And Josie's story abruptly ends with an abundance of trauma that, while not hard to believe, seems a bit piled on for the sake of the story.

For me this was a slow read and I wasn’t overall fussed to see what happened next. The pace picks up in the last 60 or so pages. The book is told in two different view points, one in during world war II and the other in 2010. There are many similarities between the two times and themes of refugees, grief, anxiety are present. I did love how the book ended, I thought it was a beautiful conclusion.
