There were parts of this that really dragged (and honestly… I found Zoe really annoying so that made it worse). The “twists” at the end were a little much, too. The book was fine—but I was never excited to pick it up or find out what happened next. The writing is pretty basic, so that made it at least a really quick read.

A truly immersive and enjoyable split pov historical fiction. Having never seen Casablanca and not having much Historical knowledge on Morocco, I found this fascinating. As usual with a split pov I enjoyed the historical timeline much more than the present day - Zoe was very hard to warm to for the majority of the book, however I did enjoy her volunteering toward the end and the quilting progress.
Josie was a joyous character to read about from the start - full of curiosity and hope and just so sharp. My heart was in my mouth toward the end and I might have shed a tear or two.
A truly beautiful read, with a heartbreaking but beautiful setting.

This book is set in a time I had the opportunity to learn about multiple times during my university years. I felt connected to the characters. I felt connected to their stories. The best works of historical fiction feel like they are real and this story makes sure to achieve that!
Overall I liked this book. I appreciated the short chapters as I felt I could get through it faster. I didn’t love the tone of Josie’s chapters because I felt like she was 20 or something not 12 but her chapters were very detailed and interesting which I liked. The twist at the end was a little out there but again overall I liked it.

A book to absorb, imbued with history and truths
I enjoyed The Storyteller of Casablanca, but it took a little time for the story to unfold and to become immersed in the Casablanca inhabited by Josie and her family, refugees in World War II and Zoe, a recently located expatriate. But, if you feel the book is not progressing, little is happening, then persevere. The story is beautifully crafted, two strands that will entagle themselves and lead to a finale that is delicately handled and written with sensitivity and care.
Sometimes books need time to work their way into your soul. Each chapter gently builds layers of context and advance the story in an unhurried pace. But each chapter has weight and meaning.
Read on and you will be grateful you did.

Such a beautifully unique story of WW2. I loved the descriptions of all the places in Casablanca, especially since I didn't know much about it and its involvement in the was at all.
Also, Josie's and Zoe's tales were utterly moving. Very different, but still so similar. I loved reading about both of them a lot.
