This is a beautiful story about accepting refugees from two time periods. Zoe, the main character in the present time, learns about the struggle of refugees in Casablanca in her time and during World War 2.
This is a book I didn’t want to end. I’ll be reading much more from this author.

An interesting idea, but not very well written, unfortunately. The author has a lot of lines that feel like forced revelations of the symbolism she was trying to convey. Character development was weak and the characters from past and present had less in common than I would have expected. I had high hopes for this book, but unfortunately, I was disappointed.

Drove me nuts. The story within a story is an effective vehicle for storytelling and these two stories had a great parallel but holy hell, I despised Zoe! What a dolt!! That was all I kept thinking; and yet I knew that once the character arched I would develop more respect for her but it didn’t come until last few pages and it couldn’t take away the damage done. She just rubbed me the wrong way from beginning. It happens
WWII time frame set in Casablanca that flipped back and forth with a modern time frame. I liked that the author shows us another part of the world impacted by WWII (often it is only Europe that is thought of as being impacted by WWII). I also liked the refugee part of the modern storyline. I didn't care for the main character featured in the modern storyline.
Really liked the dual narrative but I found the present day narrative dull. An okay twist at the end but I didn't love the ending as a whole.
