Chekhov at his best. There are moments from this one that I think about often (the brother biting the glass, "Moscow still has so much suffering ahead of her" or whatever the line is), and it is deeply, deeply moving. Such profound insight into human beings—into their relationships with each other, into the hierarchies around which they form societies. Sometimes (often) I wonder why I read books by other authors.

I really enjoy Chekhov’s writing and appreciated the characters in this novella, I only wish the story was longer so more time could be spent with them. Overall I’m happy to have read this, I just felt a little unsatisfied at the end and still had so many questions. Which I’m aware to some extent is the point of the story- where will life take you? etc. But I just wanted more- maybe a me problem.

Hidup tidaklah sederhana. Bagaimana perasaan mampu mengontrol manusia yakni persepsi terhadap lingkungan, kenangan masa lalu, serta menerima polah orang terdekat. Terkadang rasa bahagia yang hadir di awal berubah seiring waktu tumbuh kesadaran dan kenyataan yang lebih realistis. Namun masih ada harapan di masa mendatang. 3 tahun, 13 tahun, atau 30 tahun lagi?
