“One must always be careful of books," said Tessa, "and what is inside them, for words have the power to change us.”

I finally read the first book in the infernal devices trilogy and I do not regret it! In this book we follow the story of our main character, Tessa, who is going to London to visit her brother. While her stay in London she discovers she can shape shift.

“Do reasons matter when there's nothing that can be done to change things.”

My thoughts on this book are that it was a solid book with really well written characters. I love the dynamic between the characters because everyone in the London Institute is different and they’re all a mess… but that’s what I love about them.

The plot was amazing it was never ever boring, I only wished that a little more happend in the book cause I felt like something was missing but I can’t put my finger on what it was. But the characters 100% made up for it cause wow!!
The relationship between Will Herondale and Jem Carstairs is just amazing, and I finally decided which one I prefer… drum roll… JEMMMMM!! He’s just such a sweetie and he’s different and I love that about him.

Now let’s talk about the things that weren’t so good about this book… I love Cassandra Clare’s books but they’re getting a little repetitive cause I feel like in almost every series the same thing happens.
Girl who thought she was ordinary isn’t ordinary and actually has superpowers and now has to solve “insert problem”. But I did like this series more than ‘the Mortal Instruments’ but I still don’t think it can beat ‘the Dark Artifices’

Enough of me rambling this is the my final thought of this book: it was good and I loved it even though it was very basic.

This is a reread while I navigate the turbulent time of finishing my undergrad. I needed a comfort read and realised I hadn’t reread the infernal devices in a while. It definitely still delivers! The characters are all multi-faceted and feel like real people. The setting it immersive. The world building is great. These are all things that I expect to see as givens in Cassandra Clares work and they’re certainly still here. There were a few elements which both indicate the age of this book (some poorly aged jokes) and that this is some of Clares earlier work (lots of cliches like ‘she released the breath she didn’t realise she was holding). At some points, this did take me out of the immersion a bit but it never faltered me for long. All in all, a solid read.

4.5 stars!! The characters, the plot twist, incredible. Will Herondale however…I expect to see some groveling in the next two books.

Halfway through I questioned if I made the wrong decision in taking the recommendations from people, but the second half of the book I was hooked. I have the second book on the way

Sometimes you just need to go back to your comfort zone, it was nice to catch up with my old friends Will, Jem and Tessa (confirmed to be my favourite heroine Clare's universe, and one of my favourite ever). Not changing my mind about the 4 well deserved stars :)
