This was a quick, enjoyable read. I liked the characters, though they did feel a little flat. There were a few chapters where the voices between the two alternating POVs were very similar and I forgot whose perspective I was supposed to be enjoying. Overall, I did like the romance mixed with just the right amount of angst.
lighthearted
This was a very good read. There are some places where it could be stronger, such as a better transition from in-like to in-love, but the characters and their story are overall well done. I absolutely loved the conversations about being queer during this time period, particularly from Jo, one of the side characters.

I wasn't even in the mood for a book like this. I had read so many similar books recently that I started this one somewhat begrudgingly when I was in a rush to choose an audiobook. Why did I love it so much? Why was I crying over the circumstances of a side character? The characters were too charming to resist, I suppose. In addition to the romance and friendships, I really loved the interactions between Charlie and Alma. Add Jess Everlee to the list of authors who write wonderful queer historical romance. The audiobook narrator was excellent as well.

Turns out I love a romcom, but a straight up romance isn't my bag. I need more character development before we get to the smut, apparently.
