This book was an ok read. The writing was well-done, but I struggled to connect with the characters on a deeper level. Overall, I would call this a solid romance but it's not a favorite. I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a historical gay romance. I previously read the 2nd book in the series and I definitely think this one was better in both writing and plot.

I listened to this as an audio book and my biggest criticism is the voice the narrator used for Smithy. Every time he used the voice, it really pulled me out of the moment.

What a surprisingly strong debut! All the characters are great, even the side characters. And there’s a fair amount of tension watching Charlie slowly March towards his ill fated upcoming wedding. I love everything to do with the idea of secret historical kinky queer smut writing. And despite the book not really being *that* steamy, elements of kink still found their way into the content we do get, which felt like a nice touch.

I just couldn’t get into it. The embarrassing first meeting at Miles shop and then miles showing up at the wine/cake tasting was too embarrassing. The intimate scene between the characters was good. But the actual plot of the book gives me anxiety I guess.

I loved everything about this. Charlie’s friends and the other side characters were as interesting to me as Charlie and Miles. The conversation with Jo when he realized they’ve all been working together to take care of him, and how worried they all are about him, hit so hard. My heart broke every time Miles thought Ethan’s name, and crumbled to dust entirely when he finally told Charlie the whole story. Just so good all around.

Favorite Quotes:

Something odd crossed Price's face. He turned his gaze to the window, looking out of it a little desperately. As if through bars. As if he were caged.

i literally hate every single character and wanted to kms at the spicy scenes, there were a couple nice moments tho

A fun, sexual-tension filled gay historical romance between a rich aristocrat and his favorite smut author. Something about this setting just really resonates with me. I liked the characters and feel for their predicament (even the ones that are self-inflicted). Was the conflict and resolution convoluted and convenient? Yes. Did I mind? No.
