While a bit predictable, it’s still nicely written and offers up a hearty serving of what I want and expect from a good ol’ gay romance. Trashy in the best ways and emotional when it should be. It’s good! Not perfect, but it doesn’t have to be. It gave me what I asked for and then a little bit more.

Spicy sweet historical romance. The historical context adds another layer of angst to a M-M story. An interesting take on what it means to do the right thing.

Everything about this book sounds right up my alley, but I ended up only finding it okay.

I did love Charlie as a character. He was great and so much fun and I really enjoyed his journey, especially his relationships with both Jo and Alma.

Miles didn’t really do much for me, and their relationship felt the most lacking of all the relationships in this book.

It was an easy, chill read, though, and definitely a great companion for my otherwise busy weekend away.

Maybe I’d have enjoyed it more if I was relaxing with it in my own home. Who knows?

Regardless, I recommend it for anyone looking for an easy-to-read historical romance.

DID NOT FINISH: 7%

I just was not vibing with this one. I'm not sure it's totally the book's fault. I picked it up during a time of my life when I was hideously busy and didn't have much energy to read. I also think I just had unfair expectations for the book. I was hoping it would be more in vein of The Queer Principles of Kit Webb, but this book just didn't have a voice that grabbed me from the get-go like QPoKW did. The first chapter was also just sort of disorienting--tons of names and characters thrown at me without much context. Browsing reviews for this book did not convince me that it would be worth my time--most reviews I read put it in the lukewarm "it's okay" territory--so into the DNF pile it goes.

some excessive dramatics in the last 20% or so and some stuff that I think could have used some wrapping up (how do Charlie and Alma's families respond to their life choices? sort of thing) but all in all this was a delight. never thought i would read a kinky romance that also happened to be (mostly) fade to black but this one here has done it. i am impressed. looking forward to the next one in the series and hopeful for more books to come!

This was an entertaining read. I don’t do ton of historical M/M but felt like switching it up and this one sounded interesting. I enjoyed it.
