three stars seems too generous but two stars seems too harsh... this could have used higher stakes and better character development, but i loved the found family and am not opposed to reading the later books in the series even if i didn't love this one.

I quite enjoyed this! The spice was great and the characters were lovely. I really appreciated that the arc did not involve miscommunication between the two romance leads, a surprise since so much of the genre utilizes this trope.

I did like the idea of this, and I felt like Everlee did do some historical research as it pertained to the illegality of homosexuality and homosexual materials, which is a little different than other historical romances. Where I think it fell short are the MCs themselves--Charlie is whiny and Miles is boring and together I don't really root for them.
