This book gripped me in turn and then left me wanting, and it's hard to say why exactly I lost the passion for it. The whole concept of our heroine is one that lives close to my heart, and she's written beautifully. The early chapters where she can sense a wrongness within herself that she can't identify, and feels frustrated by how few avenues she has for information... These parts really spoke to me. I also really liked the introductions of certain characters like Mr. Grace and Violet Parish.

I think the book does a great job of extending sympathy to people who do not fit into society but the overwhelming homogeneity of the core cast damaged its message a little. I do want to praise the incredible writing of the heroine and Pen, though; I was very invested.

Spoiler content below.

Considering how fascinating the fae aspect of the book was I wish more time had been spent on it and that we had gotten more sympathetic perspectives from them.
