TRIGGER WARNINGS: ALCOHOLISM, SEXUAL ASSUALT, INTERTILITY, TRAMATIC CHILD INJURY

This book ended up being a DNF for me. I got to page 178 and therefore feel like I gave it a very fair chance before throwing in the towel.

Throughout the book, I believe the author meant for us to feel sorry for Daisy (the mom) and be pissed off at Simon (the dad). For some reason, I felt the opposite. I could not stand Daisy and found her to be quite insufferable. It was like all she did was put down her husband and preach about how perfect and amazing she and Millie (their daughter) were. Get off your high horse, girl, and put away that "holier and thou" attitude. Please and thank you.

Daisy has turned a blind eye to Simon's alcoholism for years. YEARS. It leads to the occurrence of a catastrophic event, and we are supposed to believe he is the only one to blame? That is not the move, Daisy. That is not it, honey. After said event occurred, Daisy babied Millie to high hell, and I just couldn't deal with that. Maybe it's because I'm not a mother and never wish to be one. I don't know. Daisy is shiesty. Shiesty, shiesty, shiesty!

This is marketed as being a thriller of sorts and in some ways it is. But I personally feel like this is more of a story showing how alcoholism can wreak havoc on a family and the lives of the people they love. I suppose it is a domestic thriller of sorts.

I did jump ahead to the epilogue and read the twist that was in there. All I can say is, WHAT IN THE WORLD WAS THAT MALARKY!? What in the actual Peter, Paul, and Mary was that? Adele Parks must have been puffing the magic dragon when she thought up that little gem.

SpoilerDaisy was so desperate for a child, and after their failed IVF attempt, she apparently decided to take matters into her own hands. She found a used condom in the bathroom trash can (while at a party) and INSEMINATED herself with the sperm inside. That is 50 shades of crazy. Is that even possible? And it was her BEST FRIEND'S HUSBAND'S SPERM! That is so messed up.

I actually felt horrible for Simon and didn't have a lick of sympathy for Daisy. But at the end of the day, Daisy seemed to think she was some kind of angel. And I love that for her. Just not for the readers.

This book just fell flat for me on so many levels. The only lie here is that this story is worth reading.

Hægfara tryllir sem er ekkert tryllir. Spennandi? Njah. Endar asnalega.

This is one of those mystery/suspense novels you have to work for to get the payoff. The layers are complicated, which I appreciate, but there were times I couldn’t help but get frustrated with the characters and think, “If you would just tell the truth . . .” Of course, then there would be no novel. I understand why the characters didn’t want to speak out, but yeesh.

This is told from the alternating points of view of married couple Simon and Daisy. They tried for years and many expensive treatments and finally had Millie. Millie is six when Simon uncovers a lie that makes his drinking go from bad to truly terrible. Addiction is a thing that not many marriages can survive, but pile on top of that significant lies between the partners, and you’re going to have real trouble.

I liked these complex characters and their friendships.

Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to review this novel, which RELEASES SEPTEMBER 5, 2020.

TW/CW: Alcoholism, infertility, sexual abuse

Lies Lies Lies was everything it says in the title. I've never read a Adele Parks novel, but this one didn't disappoint (not me anyway). Please be cautious while reading it though, as it contains a lot of strong content.

Daisy is a teacher and her husband Simon is a interior designer. They got married and had their daughter Millie after multiple fertility treatments. Somewhere down the line Simon gave into his demons and started to abuse alcohol. We all know what alcoholism looks like and how certain people (especially spouses) like to make excuses for their loved ones's behaviors. That's exactly what Daisy does for Simon. Things start to go sideways for them and their relationship.

Throughout the story it gets very intense. Simon spirals into an even darker hole and keeps on lying to Daisy about everything. She just accepts the lies and continues dragging her self-esteem and peace of mind through the dirt in the process. The book really kept me on my toes. Huge thanks to Mira Books, NetGalley, and Harlequin book tours for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Wow, just when you think you have it all figured out there comes along yet another twist. Quick read as you want to know what is coming next…or do you? First time reading this author and enjoyed the reality of the characters, although somewhat shallow in their stories you still become wrapped up in their lives.

If I haven’t got anything nice to say….

There was loads about this book that I didn’t like; a lot of the characters were awful people, some of the plot points were unlikely in the extreme, and the main characters’ terrible passivity was very frustrating. However there was still something compelling about this book and I mostly enjoyed it.

Very realistic read. However, I felt like not much happened in the first 1/2 of the book. Not super exciting overall. But good lessons and morals.

Utterly ridiculous.
