medium-paced

I was absolutely thrilled to catch up with Bea and Kesgrave again and I wasn't disappointed by the latest instalment in their adventures. Lynn Messina continues to write with a deft and witty manner and the scene at the start of the novel where poor Bea's home is cumulatively invaded by a series of society callers is absolutely hilarious and reminiscent of a scene from an opera. Secondary characters like Nuneaton continue to be a delight and I really have grown terribly fond of cousin Flora.

I enjoyed Bea and Kesgrave continuing to work together, solving problems and supporting one another. I like that they continue to be very canny and insightful - backing one another and their respective assessments. I'm wondering how long it will be possible to delay ... things, whether the wedding or the culmination of their frantic desires, but I simply can't wait until the next novel is out.

Did I mention these are ridiculous? It’s terribly easy to figure out the villain, so don’t read them for a clever mystery. Read them for the charming romance between Damien and Bea. Read them for the over-the-top characters and for entertaining banter and shenanigans. Yes, definitely read them for the shenanigans. 😂

After reading the first 4 books in this series back to back, I felt compelled to read book 5 just to see dear Bea safely wedded to Kesgrave. That made reading this book a chore, and all chores are in the boring basket. The mystery aspect is much more simpler than in previous books, especially no dead body fell on her path until half way through the book. The only thing I could enjoy about this investigation was that Bea spent a lot of time with Kesgrave. They did the whole investigation and confronting villains together, which is different from previous books, and still Bea shined as the main character, not side-stepped by the main male character. There were a lot of heated moments that are much needed in a romance, but this is clean romance through and through.

I loved the book, as always Bea and Kesgrave were amazing. I can't wait for more of them.
