Was such a good book! It was so funny, I was constantly to cackling and giggling. I knew the relationship with her mom was gonna make me cry from the beginning. I love how it ended.

Finally a 5 star read!

Abby Jimenez has somehow turned a summer fling into a must-read slow burn romance.

This book follows the emotionally overly cautious Emma and the altruistic and somewhat naive Justin. They meet online by chance, sharing a "curse" of sorts, and set out to spend the summer together to break it.

Emma is a very relatable character. While I have not experienced what she has gone through, I found her inner thoughts to be similar to things I have thought, believed and felt before. Following her character journey throughout the book was sometimes sad, sometimes hopeful and sometimes inspiring. I wanted things to work out for her, because she's a good person, not a perfect one.

The complicated relationship between Emma and her Mother
Amber
was full of highs and lows. Even at times when I thought her friend Maddy was right, I found myself hoping she was not.

The bond between Maddy and Emma reminded me of many of the strong friendships I have in my own life and feel lucky to have. Maddy was more than just a side character, she is a fully fleshed out person with her own inner-world and deep history with Emma. She was a perfect wingwoman for Emma with Justin, but also an anchor point for Emma when things with her mom went south.

Justin is a kind-hearted character who is kind of being forced between a rock and a hard place. He knows the value of stability, something that Emma yearns for silently, and is willing to make tough decisions for the "greater good." Justin felt real, he knew he had to do the right thing, but his altruism and selflessness wasn't without anger, despair and grief.

His friendships also felt very real, though different from the one shared between Maddy and Emma. Justin has the kind of friendships that form over a lifetime. The kind of comfortable friends you can insult and banter with but still have one another's backs.

The complicated family relationships in this book made it very interesting, and served as a place for Justin and Emma to understand one another and their very different situations. While Justin grew up in a more stable environment, Emma spent her life in and out of Foster care situations, never knowing when she would see her mom.

Seeing Neil show up with Amber was truly a shocking moment for me, and it was fascinating to watch Amber moving through life at a different part of her mental health cycle. At the start of the book, she's newly "in love" with Neil. Emma can't help but notice she's radiant, wearing perfume and seems happy and desperately hopes her mother is actually going to turn around for good this time. Neil has money, a house, plenty of resources, everything Amber could need. It was heartbreaking to watch the cycle move into a mental breakdown. Especially after Part of Your World, I truly loathe this woman. Mental health is and explaination, but not an excuse to treat people the way Amber does.
