this book taught me so much about modern congo history while also telling an amazing story about a baptist family! the characters are so real. 4.75 stars because i couldn’t really relate to any of the characters and found the story’s pacing a bit inconsistent.

4.5 stars? i found this book super compelling for most of it. early on, i had trouble with the leah chapters b/c she was so religious, but i guess that just goes to show how much she changed as she slowly but surely lost faith in her dad/religion. it was cool to get the chapters from the different women's perspectives, and it was clever the way the author would have some of the girls think in typos/misunderstood phrases. was a helpful history overview of the DRC/area of central Africa. would def recommend for anyone working in global development/health. the last part of the book where it would jump ahead years was an interesting way to cover lots of ground. i was glad adah became an MD and lost her lean, but was surprised rachel choose to stay in south africa. leah getting married and staying mostly local made sense for her, i thought it was interesting (inaccurate?) that she never mentioned her sons facing discrimination from having a white mom.
