I didn't love this book as much as everyone else did. If the story had ended right after Ruth May dies, then I would have liked it more. Up until that point, it was engaging and very interesting. Each sister had their own voice and the lackluster parenting was hard on them. However, after Ruth May's death, it dragged on and on and each sister became more unlikable. Adah basically does nothing. And the mom's tales in the beginning of each part were ridiculous. I find it hard to believe she would have stayed in the jungle, even if it were against her husband's wishes, especially dealing with his zealousness.

I loved all the different perspectives this book gave, and all the character's very unique personalities! They stayed true to themselves throughout the whole book, and all the catastrophes they faced. It helped give me ideas for starting my own closure and healing process with Africa. All who have experienced Africa and come back wondering what to do with what they saw, read this book!

Beautiful all female point-of-view epic of life in the Congo for one family. Life changing...at least for me it was.
