I read this several years ago and couldn't put it down. I really need to reread it.
I love this book. From the opening pages to the very end. I think Kingsolver is a genius with using multiple perspectives to tell the story. And Adah is one of my favorite characters of all time.
I would never have picked it up based on the blurb on the back, but it came highly recommended. I was hooked by page 4, just from BK's writing!
I love that it is a story told through 5 perspectives. You get to "see" the same events through the eyes of a 5 year old and a 16 yr old and their mother too (but not at all so that anything gets redundant or boring!). I also learned a ton about American foreign policy, missionary life, families, the Congo, the 1960s, etc.
It's one of those books that you don't want to finish because you have to say good bye to characters you have come to love.

I thought this was wonderful; beautiful writing, insights into Africa and a brilliant story about 4 daughters.
Very compelling and beautifully written about a young American family following their evangelical father on a mission to the Congo. A little slower paced storyline, but fascinating to see how each sister was drastically different and represented different mindsets/political views of today. Especially compelling during our current events of racism and virus pandemic.

I loved this book! It was recommended to me by a dear friend and lived up to my expectation. It's a long read, but VERY good! I highly recommend it to others!
The first 400 pages are excellent. The last 150 pages are not my cup of tea - basically a ginormous epilogue and we all know how I feel about epilogues. Why can’t authors just stop writing. Leave it alone. EDITORS, ARE YOU LISTENING TO ME?!
Okay, but let’s not let this affect how I feel about the first 400 pages. Still worth a read if you just power skim the last bit.
