A reread after over a decade. I used to cite this as my favourite book and wanted to revisit to see if it held up over time. I really like Barbara Kingsolver’s writing and still think the book is excellent. An extra decade of perspective has informed my tastes and I rate it a little lower than I used to. Still great historical fiction.

This one was challenging at times but I loved it in the end.
The characters are complex, flawed, candid and so human. Kingsolvers storytelling is potent and powerful.
I learnt a lot from this book that I didn’t know (and definitely should have known).
