Wow, I literally felt everything. So so witty and funny and at the very same time vigorous in its critique. Thought provoking in its exploration on colonialism, post colonialism, missionaries and christianity through multiple character perspectives. Maybe too didactic at times? And a bit too long could’ve been wrapped up 100 pages earlier maybe lol. Still very much worth the read very glad I picked it up in a hostel.
This should be required reading in all US high schools.

PopSugar Reading Challenge 2022: A book that features two languages (Kikongo & French)
This was an impressive and expansive book about an American family that travel to the Congo to work as missionaries.
Reflective, philosophical, sometimes a little too poetic, but delivers an unflinching, eye-opening perspective on colonialism told through the sisters' differing voices.
The characters are mostly unsympathetic, but the writing is very readable. This book challenged the way I think in many ways and painted a multifaceted picture of the Congo.
Highly recommended.
